“Felipe and I were both members of CatholicMatch, a Catholic dating website. God bless our mothers who had paid for us
to maintain our memberships on the site for years prior to us connecting. I had reached a point in my life where I, really
and truly this time, had given myself over to the Lord’s providence, committing to joyfully living according to His will, be
it as a single person or in dating and then married life. After I came to that conclusion, I did exactly the opposite of the
Lord would want and I passed over Felipe’s profile without sending him a message for two ridiculous reasons: he was an
inch shorter than me and bald. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit moved in me to go back to his profile and take a second look.
At a foundational level, I thought, “You know, this guy is Catholic and wants to love the Lord better and he most
certainly isn’t down with socialism and communism having moved from Venezuela to the US when he was 13. As a the
Catholic daughter of a Cuban immigrant who fled communism, that’s a big deal! I should send him a message.” So on
November 3, 2019, I sent him a message. Eleven days later, he replied and I replied the same day. About 2 weeks passed
and…crickets. Nothing from him. I sent him a message on November 26, 2019, telling him my subscription was expiring
soon and sent him my number in case he wanted to reach out. He replied to my message the next day with his number.
From there, we texted until our first date on December 3, 2019. No, I don’t remember who sent the first text.”
“Felipe isn’t perfect; neither am I. For the rest of our lives on earth, we will work daily to get each other to Heaven. We
will fall along the way. I love that at times, he will drag me to the fount of God’s mercy and goodness and that at times, I
will drag him. I love that we will know that challenging each other to be saints is paramount to our holiness, even if it
isn’t fun or is inconvenient. I love that he is willing to welcome children and to work with me to build the kingdom of
God through our family, knowing our children will be on loan to us before, by the grace of God, their eventual return to
the Father in Heaven. I love that he adores my mother and treats her like the queen she is and that he has earned the
respect of my brothers and my other friends and family. I never dreamed I would marry someone like Felipe, and I’m so
thankful those other dreams did not come true and he became my reality instead.”
Elena and Felipe had the most beautiful ceremony at St. Monica’s Catholic Church. You’ll remember from their proposal and engagement story, how faith is an important factor in how their love began and grew. Elena and Felipe had the most amazing mass, with three priests who love them very much, they had a full choir (Elena is part of the choir), and it was such a glorious mass to have witnessed. Afterwards, they held an unforgettable reception surrounded by the beautiful Dallas night sky. The Room on Main is situated in the heart of downtown Dallas and the night view from the venue is fantastic. The tall high foot ceilings and magnificent 15 foot tall windows gave it a spectacular view. Elena danced with her three brothers, each uniquely “them”. It was such a teary eyed moment to witness, one because I know just how much she loves her brothers and they were all taking her Dad’s place.
They had fabulous food stations in every corner of the venue and instead of cake they had ice-cream cookie sandwiches, plus a midnight snack of “burritos”. The night ended with an “hora loca” which consisted of a special band coming in towards the end of the night playing amazing music. It was a fantastic day filled with tears of joy, laughter and left you with the greatest sense of happiness for the couple. I am so honored to have genuinely gotten to know Elena and Felipe and wish them a lifetime of love and happiness.
