As a Dallas Family Photographer I constantly get asked on tips to better prepare for your family session. So after photographing the Hernandez family I figured what a great time to talk about a few tips I share with families who book us for their family’s legacy and heirlooms!
Without further ado here are a few tips to better prepare for your family session!
Having to figure out what to wear is a feet in itself, it’s even more so when you have to coordinate your entire family! Hope this can shed some light and help to see the stress!
Before you start looking through closets. I suggest you consider what color palette you want to go for and what would look best with your home decor. Since these family images will most likely end up on your wall.
Do you want a neutral palette of creams, tans, browns? Or Are you interested in a more bold palette like Cranberries, mauves?
After considering your home colors and desired color palette…
•Accessorize: Consider a hat, scarves if the weather is in the fall, jewelry or layers of clothing.
•Props: a family heirloom that may fit into the scenery. A quilt, or light blanket to sit on.
•Comfort: Make sure everyone is comfortable. If they’ll be sitting maybe short dresses wouldn’t fit the scene.
•Personality: Feel free to add a touch of each person’s personality. There isn’t anything better than seeing your family exactly as they are!
•Large prints or patterns
•Giant logos
•Don’t match, instead complement.
I love family sessions to be candid and to show genuine emotion. We’ll do a mixed of posed photos and try to focus on the personality of your family!
If you want to include your family pet in for your session, you are welcome to do so. We do recommend to bring someone else who will not be in the photos for afterwards so they can take care of your pet as we continue to take our family photos.
The best time for outdoor family sessions is around golden hour. All of this also depends on the location. Sessions last between 1 hour to an hour and a half.
We recommend to talk to your kids about the upcoming family session to prep them! Let them know how fun it will be to have photos of you all together!
Your wardrobe is ready to go, family is all ready. The location is perfect and we’ll have fun!
After we get the formal poses out of the way, just be yourself. Don’t take these photos too seriously, making yourself nervous!
I’ll always have you touching. Maybe a snuggle, a hug or soft kiss. I want to see connection and love!
Again don’t stress! If kids are nervous or being silly. Just let them be! Stay calm, and they’ll be calm too!
Be prepared: Bring snacks, water, or whatever will keep them happy if they need a treat!
Have fun! Enjoy the experience!
After the session, I immediately back up images so they are safe. Turnaround time for family sessions are between two-three weeks! You’ll receive a final online gallery where you will be able to view, download or share it with family and friends! We also have a convenient online shop for all your printing needs such as wall prints, albums, canvases and so much more!
I look forward to photographing your family and giving your precious family heirlooms!
