One of the things I always wondered when I started my photography journey and more than anything, being a Dallas wedding photographer.. was finding different locations for my shoots.
Whether photography is your full-time job or simply a hobby, it’s easy to run out of locations to shoot at. While many photographers stick to the same spots every time, finding a new shoot location can add a whole new look to your photos. If you’re feeling burnt out from your current shoot spots or simply need a change of scenery, here are several ways you can find a fun new location.
USE GOOGLE MAPS
Believe it or not, Google is a great tool for finding location data. Perhaps your client has given you a certain area he or she would like to shoot, but you’re unfamiliar with the location. Simply use Google Maps to search the surrounding area and find the backgrounds you want for your shoot.
FOLLOW LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHERS
There are only so many good spots in a city and following other local photographers on social media is a great way for location inspiration.
GO FOR A SUNDAY STROLL
Take advantage of your time off and drive around new (to you) spots in the city. Focus on potential backdrops, lighting, etc. Don’t forget to bring your camera with you so you can see exactly how these spots photograph.
ASK AROUND
Join a photography club or social media group and ask others areas they prefer. Other photographers can also offer tips and tricks that someone without an eye for photography wouldn’t think to include.
BUY A GUIDE BOOK
Being a tourist in your own city can be a great way to find new shoot locations. Guide books are also great about telling you what to expect, where to park, what the best time to visit is, etc.
